What is Literacy and How Do Children Acquire It?

Literacy is the ability to learn to speak, listen, read, write and think.

Children begin by developing oral language, that is, speaking and listening, then later learn to read and write.  The pathways that children take are different and developmental.  Becoming literate is a complex process.  The literacy learner needs to develop a knowledge base and a repertoire of strategies together to assist in the process of becoming literate. Literacy acquisition, reading and writing, has three key aspects.  They are learning the code; making meaning and thinking critically.
